1880-1910 MULTICOLOURED HARLEQUIN DIAMOND ANTIQUE VINTAGE QUILT TOP FOR REPAIR OR RESCUE
This lovely old quilt top would have been a stunner in its day….it is constructed using DIAMOND NINE PATCH blocks – #232a BB and is suitable for either restoration or fabric rescue to recycle.
The quilt top measures 69” x 86” and was purchased during 2003 from Virginia – USA.
The diamond blocks each measure 4” x 9” and were hand pieced from a myriad fabrics from the turn of the century with some that look to date a little earlier….these were then joined together by machine.
My favourite fabrics are all the various shirtings the maker used….look at those tennis rackets and also the croquet stick/ball fabric!
There are 120 blocks in total….the maker elected to set her diamond blocks in 15 x 8 rows using a shirting setting block in between.
She then surrounded her blocks with a 3.25” of the same shirting.
This quilt top is in fair condition for age….the main issue is the staining that seems to affect the setting blocks more so than the pieced blocks and this would need replacing in those areas as there are holes resulting in some of them.
I don’t believe this quilt top was ever finished into a quilt as I can’t see any evidence of the tiny tie holes or edge wear….with a bit of love and restoration this would make a lovely summery quilt: otherwise you may elect pull this top apart for loads of lovely blocks for use in a new project!
