1940’s CHARMING ANTIQUE COBWEB / SPIDERWEB FEEDSACKS VINTAGE QUILT – PRISTINE!
This is a beautiful hand pieced and hand quilted 1940’s SPIDERWEB or COBWEB Antique Quilt in immaculate, barely used condition!
The quilt measures 69″ x 79”…..I purchased this in 2000 from an Australian dealer that had originally purchased this quilt from New York: USA.
There are 5 x 4 rows of large string pieced Cobwebs measuring 13” x 13” each & they are then surrounded by a border of half sized webs.
The colourful blocks are constructed from classic 1940’s prints and solids including a large amount of feedsack prints….the cream feedsack fabric used for the setting blocks forms a grid of four pointed stars between the cobwebs. It’s an amazing thing to really study this quilt: look once and you see the stars…..look again and you see the webs!
A medium weight cotton wadding has been used for the batting with a cream feedsack/calico backing fabric…….the quilt has then been hand quilted, firstly by outlining the 4 pointed stars and then with ever decreasing sized circles echoing the webs with neat small stitches at an average of 7- 8 stitches to the inch! This is a medium weight quilt.
This lovely quilt is in excellent barely used condition: you could literally use this on your bed tomorrow & it should last another 80 years!
The only slight condition issue I noted was that at either short end there’s an ever so slight wave where the quilt has been handled over the years…..I looked very closely but couldn’t see any age spots or stains…..but I am sure there must be one or two?
The fabrics are perfect & quilting stitches strong…….there’s absolutely no odours to this quilt: it’s as bright, crisp and snowy clean as the day it was finished!
