Description
Gorgeous & sumptuous silk Victorian era handmade lap or child’s size patchwork quilt that has been hand pieced in a graphic tiny scale HEXAGON LOG CABIN pattern….the blocks have been arranged in a concentric circles aka TRIP AROUND THE WORLD placement.
The quilt measures 48″ x 69” and was purchased in 2003 from Sacramento – California: USA.
This is a true multi-coloured quilt with the small hexagon log cabin blocks set amongst a field of black silk stars!
Which do you see first….the hexies or the stars!?
The maker has used a lovely array of different coloured silks in both prints and plains.
There are (154) x tiny hand pieced hexi log cabin blocks: each side measuring just 2” long….the logs themselves are only a half inch wide!
The blocks have been arranged in 11 x 13 rows of blocks with tiny black silk setting triangle points in between and the with same black silk used for a 3.5” wide outer border.
The blocks have been hand stitched onto a foundation fabric of various calicos: a whisper thin cotton batting was used in the middle of the quilt….this was all then placed over a pretty pink polished cotton sateen backing fabric.
The backing fabric was brought to the front to form a half inch binding finished with a row of feather stitching….the quilt maker then used pink cotton stitches as anchor points within all the black centres and star points.
Despite the damage to some of the silks, in my opinion this would still make a stunning display quilt….either framed behind glass or hung as is!
I have tried to show the extent of these problems in the attached pictures.
I love how the damaged silks actually show the skeleton or bones of the quilt….you can see the quilt makers neat small stitches as well as all her calico foundation fabric choices!
There are no odours or bad stains visible.
