Pine Burr Quilt Block – Free PDF Pattern

Here's a cute photo showing three very different variations of the Pine Burr quilt block from my collection!
Which one is your favourite?
Personally I love that raggedy scrappy top & all her plaid-y imperfections.....but then I adore them all.

My RW&B Pine Burr beauty was purchased from Mark French on eBay in 2000 right when the collecting bug had really kicked in.
I had already been collecting antique quilts, tops, blocks and fabric sporadically for 4 years......but then I fell hard!

This quilt is clearly a Southern gal originating from Tennessee as confirmed by the 'Mayfield Woolen Mills Incorporated' fabric.
Mayfield Woolen Mills were in Kentucky, a label found on google tells me that they were:
'Manufacturers of the Celebrated All Wool-Filling Mayfield Cassimere Pants'.
and
'We employ more hands than any mill in the State'.

There are other clues to this quilt's Southern origins:
* A design that used a lot of teeth or points.
* Baptist fan quilting done with black thread and then those classic big clunky stitches!
* The fugitive solid blue background fabric and half blocks used at one end.

Soooooo here she is - my mini version of the Pine Burr block sitting astride her big sisters.
Originally I drafted my block with a four patch center with the view to 'patterning it one day'......hmmmmm that was two years ago.

This week I revisited my original drawings and tweaked a few lines here n' there to include a nine patch centre.
The original block measures a hefty 15” so this is wayyyyy undersize…..if she were a fish you would throw her back!
A really cute make at 7.5” finished......made using foundation piecing.

Here we are finally......the FREE pattern to make your own Pine Burr block.....and you even have choices!
Firstly decide whether you like the four or nine patch centre.
Personally I like the symmetry of the nine patch but that’s the perfectionist of my other self speaking!

Use these diagrams to:
Trace templates for hand piecing,
Cut the pattern apart for papers for EPP (English Paper Piecing).
I have also included foundation patterns to FPP (Foundation Paper Piece) either block.

Both variations are for a 7.5" finished block.
If you would like to make the full size block then enlarge the printing to 200% which will bring you up to 15".
