1890’s CHARMING COUNTRY STYLE BASEBALL BLOCK ANTIQUE VINTAGE QUILT – HAND QUILTED
This is a lovely country style hand pieced & hand quilted 1880’s Red, White & Black BASEBALL, SNOWBALL, ROB PETER TO PAY PAUL or STEEPLECHASE BLOCK Quilt that measures 66″ x 82”…..it was purchased in 2001 from Baltimore-Maryland: USA.
There are 224 individual baseball blocks each measuring 4.5” x 4.5” which are then grouped together in blocks of four thus making up the eye catching pattern.
The quilt is surrounded by a wide 4” red hand dyed border.
The overall colour scheme is red, black & white which includes a lovely range of fabrics from this era.
A medium cotton wadding with great loft has been used for the batting, the backing fabric was pieced from three narrow sections of white/cream calico& the quilt has then has been quilted together with 6-7 stitches to the inch in a gridded squares design then with the outer border being quilted in a baptist fan pattern.
This is a medium to heavy weight quilt.
There are a few condition issues with this quilt….. there is one block in the centre where the brown fabric has perished & would need replacing……there are a few other worn fabrics noted in less than 5% of the quilt & a couple of small incidental marks on the top of the quilt.
The mysterious thing about this quilt is that it appears red dye was applied directly to the border fabric AFTER the quilting was completed! I have tried to show where the dye doesn’t penetrate all the way down to the stitches in places and also you can see the dye start/stop where the fabric was turned to the back for binding!
Lastly there is dye transfer on one side to the backing which shows as pink.
The quilting stitches are strong & there are absolutely no odours!
This is a lovely quilt in very good condition for age…..a barely used quilt with plenty more years of general use left…..a great restoration project & real discussion piece!
