1860 – 80’s CHARMING CHIMNEY SWEEP BLOCK ANTIQUE VINTAGE QUILT TOP – CHOCOLATES & MADDER BROWNS – #3

This is a lovely unsigned 1860- 80’s ALBUM, CHIMNEY SWEEP or CHRISTIAN CROSS – #3266 BB Antique Quilt Top in various browns ranging from chocolate though to madder brown.
I purchased this top during 2002 from a seller living in New York: USA…..it measures 76” x 88”.

There are 42 x hand pieced Chimney Sweep Blocks each measuring 10” x 10″….these have then been sewn together by machine.
The maker used a classic shirting print to join the blocks together with 2.5” sashing strips and then surrounded her top on three sides with borders of the same shirting fabric.

You can see that this top originally belonged to a tied comforter by the tiny holes left from the ties as well as some batting residue visible on the underside.
Overall this quilt top is in quite good condition for age….the stitching and fabrics are strong on the whole except for half a dozen blocks that will need replacing….I have shown the worst of these.
There are some very minor storage stains which should be easily removed with a soak when the quilt is finished: I didn’t note any significant odours.
With a little effort this could be finished into a gorgeous serviceable quilt, placed on display as-is….or the blocks/fabrics salvaged and used for another project.
