1860 – 80’s SIGNATURE ALBUM BLOCK ANTIQUE VINTAGE QUILT TOP – CUTTER FOR RESCUE – #2
This is an interesting signed 1860 – 80’s ALBUM, CHIMNEY SWEEP or CHRISTIAN CROSS – #3266 BB, Antique Quilt Top in various browns ranging from chocolate though to the most marvellous madder browns.
I purchased this piece during 2001 from a seller living in Vermont: USA….it measures 74” x 87”.
There are 22 x hand pieced Album Blocks each measuring 13” x 13”….these have then been sewn together by hand.
The maker used plain muslin alternate setting squares to join her blocks together except for one fascinating corner where she looks to have had a different plan or maybe one left over block!?
Now here’s the really interesting thing….all the blocks are stamped with signatures….but it’s the same name in each block ‘John Doxey’ which is quite fascinating to me as to why!?
You can see that this top originally belonged to a well-used tied comforter by the tiny holes left from the ties as well as the stitching line visible around the edges.
This quilt top is in fair condition for age….the seams and fabrics are strong on the whole except for three blocks along one top edge of the top where it appears to have been folded over….I have shown the worst of these.
There is staining and fading evident in places: I didn’t note any significant odours.
I would be inclined to salvage the blocks or fabric and use them in a new project.
