1890-1910 – FISHBONES! GRAPHIC STRING PIECED LOG CABIN VINTAGE ANTIQUE QUILT TOP
This visually graphic handstitched string pieced patchwork quilt top reminds me of fishbones.
The top measures 68″ x 81” and was purchased during 2007 from Wisconsin: USA.
The overall colour palette of the quilt is red, white & blue……featuring a wonderful variety of beautiful cretonne floral furnishing fabrics!
I spotted a mysterious very early blue & brown block printed fabric that was used in a few places likely dating to around 1830: perhaps it was included from the family scrap bag….fascinating!
It’s such a crazy juxtaposition to find it sitting alongside a 1890’s neon or claret fabric!
There are 99 blocks in total each measuring approx. 7.5” x 7.5” arranged in 9 x 11 rows.
The fabrics were hand pieced onto squares of off white calico foundation fabric……at one end squares of blue & white homespun were used: these squares were also hand pieced together.
This is in very good condition for it’s age & was originally used as a top to an old tied comforter hence the tiny tie holes can be seen if you look closely: the fabric wears the patina of a lifetime of gentle use which are strong enough to be used again!
I noticed there is some overall fading from sunlight plus less than 2% of the logs have worn and need replacing: most of these surround the very edges of the quilt & could actually be covered with a wide binding.
I can see a few insignificant age spots plus noted that on the blue & white homespun that was used as foundation backing squares appear to have already have some rust coloured stains before it was repurposed/
The stitching & seams are strong & there are no odours.
Replace those few logs & with very little effort this top could be finished into a gorgeous quilt to keep the family warm this Winter: just add your borders, batting & a complimentary backing……place onto your frame & stitch away!
Otherwise simply hang it as-is on gorgeous display, place it folded in a quilt stack or throw it over a rail/couch/end of the bed etc.
Remember this item is over 100 years old so it won’t be like purchasing a new quilt: please see all photos & read the description to avoid disappointments.
This item comes from a non-smoking household with no pets coming into contact with the quilts and fabric.
